Into the Inferno

Filmmaker Werner Herzog and volcanologist Clive Oppenheimer embark upon a global journey exploring some of the world’s most mythical volcanoes. They travel to Mount Sinabung – narrowly escaping a deadly eruption – and Mount Merapi on Java, one of Indonesia’s most sacred volcanoes, among many others. Ignoring the danger that looms overhead, they speak with scientists and indigenous peoples alike, seeking to understand the complex and deeply rooted relationship between mankind and one of nature’s greatest wonders. Miles away from a conventional science documentary, “Into the Inferno” artfully blends reportage, history and philosophy into a riveting cinematic experience with a deliciously eccentric voiceover by the nutty German genius that is Werner Herzog himself. Offering extraordinary locales, outré characters and improbable stories, this is a chance to go deep inside a mesmerizing subject and emerge with new understanding.
